Did you know there's no funding or instructional time allocated for art or PE in WCSD elementary schools? That means many of our K-5 kids will never have a dedicated art or PE teacher and regular, guaranteed instruction in either one of these important subjects.
Art and PE are both backed by peer-reviewed research as highly beneficial for children's social-emotional, physical, mental and academic development. These programs are also often what make children want to go to school.
Sadly, here in WCSD, only schools where parents are able to raise the money to pay the art or PE teacher's salary have this instruction available for students, which makes the elementary school experience inequitable from site to site.
We're pushing education leaders to reallocate funds from unproven, unnecessary student screen-time programs to help pay for an art and PE teacher at all 66 of our public elementary schools.
Action StepS
We made a WCSD records request to find out how many of our elementary schools have raised the money to provide PE or art on their own. The district said they have no such records. Please help us find out. Contact us to let us know if your child's school does or does not have these parent-funded programs.
