Report a Recess Violation

WCSD Board Policy 5600 is based on the Nevada School Wellness Policy, which on page 4 states that schools shall not "withhold opportunities for physical activity, e.g. recess, physical education, etc. as punishment." It also states that Nevada schools must provide children with at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity during each school day.

If recess is being withheld or your child is not getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity during each school day for any other reason, report the violation using the WCSD link below, which goes to the district wellness team and the Nevada Department of Agriculture (they oversee the state school wellness policy).

If your child goes to school in Nevada outside the Washoe County School District, please report the violation using the Nevada link below. This goes to the Nevada Department of Agriculture.

In either case, if you feel comfortable doing so, you should also let your teacher or a school administrator know that a violation of the Nevada School Wellness Policy has occurred.

Our Say YES to RECESS Nevada bill will be introduced in February 2027, but until it is passed into law, we must use these measures to try to ensure our children receive recess during the school day.

The bill will seek to mandate 45 minutes of recess per school day in our elementary schools and bar withholding recess from K-5 kids for academic or minor disciplinary reasons.
