We are now the official Nevada chapter of Say YES to RECESS! This is a national parent-led movement to pass state recess laws based on decades of research showing free play and recess improve student mental and physical health, as well as behavior and academic performance.
We're working with Nevada legislators to introduce a bill this February that would mandate more recess time during each school day and prohibit schools from withholding recess for academic or disciplinary reasons.
As it stands, some of our kids are getting as little as 15 minutes of recess during a six-hour school day. And with no funding for PE in our elementary schools, recess is their only opportunity to really move.
Action StepS
Stand by as we'll soon be asking Nevada residents to email their legislators to tell them to support our bill.
If you find out recess was withheld from your child for academic or disciplinary reasons, let your school know this violates WCSD Board Policy 5600, based on the Nevada School Wellness Policy, which on page four states that schools shall not "withhold opportunities for physical activity, e.g. recess, physical education, etc. as punishment."
