We are now registered as the official Washoe County chapter of Schools Beyond ScreensThis is a push for intentional tech use in the Washoe County School District, including only purchasing ed-tech tools with strong peer-reviewed evidence and reducing screen time whenever possible. You can view the full list of reform proposals on the national Schools Beyond Screens website.

We're currently reeling from the school board's May 12 vote to renew the online i-Ready lesson platform, which students as young as 5 are required by our district to use each week. The only state i-Ready requirement is the reading assessment for children in kindergarten through third grade, which the state funds as part of Nevada's Read By Grade 3 Law.

In the future, we may work with our state legislators to repeal this requirement, as it means our K-3 students must get used to screen time in order to be assessed by computer three times a year. Unfortunately, data shows the RBG3 law has not improved reading proficiency in our state or district since it was enacted in 2015.

Watch 90 seconds of a WCSD school-board meeting to see why the voices of parents, teachers, pediatricians and other stakeholders must be heard in force by our ELECTED school-board trustees.

They just blew past our i-Ready offramp and wasted $2 million (taxpayer dollars) that could have been used to help bring art and PE into our elementary schools.
